for these years. people have been afraid of the leadership of the nra who really have to be characterized as enablers of mass murder and will continue to be so if they oppose reasonable restrictions on gun violence. you know, on friday, the same day as the tragedy that occurred in newtown, a maniac attacked an elementary school in china with a knife. he wounded 22 children but they all lived. they will all come home. the difference here is that the maniac had a gun and 26 people are dead. in china, he had a knife. 22 children were wounded but they're all going to be okay. it is our fault if we continue to let this insanity reign in this country. we know what to do about it. we have death by gun rates 15, 20 times more than any industrialized country. we know why. we have to stop this. >> ezra, there's a new "chicago trib" editorial out today by dick durbin talking about what will it take. what holds us back are political organizations that are well funded and continue to resist reasonable limitations. there is a parallel between the gridlock in washington and the erie silence in congress

been associated with the nra and indicated their new openness to gun laws have not been the house republicans who would have to vote on a measure. i think it continues to be a very tough task in washington to get federal legislation through the house, that the president could sign on, and not impossible, but i just don't see the kind of movement and outrage that we have seen elsewhere reflected in that important body. now, we do have the nra having a press conference on friday, promising to propose measures. that could be very significant, if they did something, some significant movement that might encourage republican legislators to move on this as well. i think it is a tough battle and that's one reason the white house has been pretty gingerly -- moved gingerly in laying out exactly what it is the president is willing to do. >> lynn, as you know, jay carney said yesterday the president would actively support dianne feinstein's deal to ban assault weapons. he also used the phrase 16 times. how do you balance issues like this? you have the fiscal cliff, you have the new cabinet, t

slamming the nra calling the group's leader a gun nut and politicians divided along party lines with the thought of more guns in schools. >> i do not believe that those remarks represent anywhere near a significant portion of america. >> school safety is a complex issue with no simple no single solution but i believe trained, armed security is one key component among many that can provide the first line of difference as well as the last line of defense. >> reporter: the debate over semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines has raged since the shooting at sandy hook. a gallup poll found 53% agreed increasing police presence in schools would be very effective. a third said somewhat effective, 12% said not effective and 42% said banning the sale of automatic weapons and nor an third, 36% said it would not be effective. feel free to weigh in on my page at rick levanthol over the debate of gun rights and greater restrictions continues. >> heather: rick, thank you. >> gregg: search for justice in the benghazi, libya terror attacks. a scathing report placing blame squarely for

under having reasonable gun controls sunday the second amendment. >> the nra has made a statement today. the key part saying they're prepared to make meaningful contributions to make sure this doesn't happen again. >> don't hold your breath. >> jeffrey, tell me this annoying -- what did he call me, a bucolic brit. as someone who went through, very similar, the children same age killed. which means we only get 35 gun letters a year. it's the same in australia. many european companies have a similar rate. we just don't get how the nr are a is apparently so powerful that it's able to dictate policy on this on the way it does. is that going to change that michael bloomberg came out and said stop being so terrified of the nra. >> i think nra is just as powerful as they have been. and they have all the time in the world. the news media, we have a short attention span. six months from now, we're not going to be covering this story around the clock. but the nra is going to be working even harder. any debate about gun control will start to get bogged down in details which do you band, do you ban

around money. that really is mind boggling. thank you. up next, the nra's response to gun violence? what else, more guns. the new battle over gun violence with chris matthews. you're watching "hardball" the place for politics. >> welcome back to hardball. the tragic school shooting has put renewed focus not just on the guns, but on school safety itself. >> i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation. and to do it now. >> but here's what it looks like when you run the numbers. slate magazine took a look at what a program to put armed guards in every school might cost. there's nearly a hundred thousand public schools and the average police officer makes about $55,000 a year. so a lowball estimate would be about 5.4 billion a year. what can we really do to keep our children safe from guns? good question. joining me now expert, michael nutter of philadelphia and eugene robinson. mayor nutter, thank you so much for joining me. you're on the front line every time there's a homicide in philad

of the nra and certainly law enforcement on these issues in the past. the famous exchange during the debate in '08 and '07 on these issues so he's got credibility, and i think the president is setting up his game plan pretty smartly at this point. right now the country is in a mood to do something, and i think that republicans have to recognize that, number one and number two, that right now again, the president is in a political position where he's got more cards to play than republicans necessarily do, so i think there has to be a willingness to first see what the president puts on the table and try to meet him on that point and the nra is the first e effort to hear what they have to say on this, and they'll have a measured and a more com pro hencive approach to addressing this issue. >> what do you think the chances are of that happening, governor and the chances that we've seen some pro-gun democrats stepping up to the plate, but republicans are a much tougher sell. >> think you're right with the question you posed to michael and michael is correct. >> law enforcement is key. joe biden

rifle. i don't know anyone that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. >> i had an nra rating of "a." you know, enough is enough. i'm the father of three daughters, this weekend, they all said, dad, you know, how can this go on? >> the republicans are going to have to figure out. i mean, do they wapnt to be the party and this is what it's going to boil down to. this is the world they live in. do they want to be seen two years from now, four years from now, as the party of glocks. >> today, in "daily news." 9 title of "blood on your hands." when you hear joe manchin and joe scarborough talking about the party of glocks. are you worried, we need to bring up violent video games and hollywood as well. is the reinterpretation, the modern day and that people have access to assault weapons? >> you know what is also disturbing, thomas, people s, d republicans -- here we have a town that was controlled in by democrats, the white house for two years. and nothing took place. for the partisans in our country to already start injecting politics in here, that saddens me further. now, we have to

a correction to make, earlier in the show when i said if you ask nra members that they believe if people have to pass a background check in this country before buying a firearm, i said 57% of members said yes to it. it is actually 74% of members who want a background check that want -- 74, not 57, sorry about that, we switched up our slides on that. here on nbc, our continuing coverage of the mass shooting, this massacre at sandy hook elementary school will continue now into the night. live from newtown, with chris jansing, please stay with us. >> reporter: 28 people dead in the nation's latest shooting massacre, but this time, the horror is at an elementary school. this is msnbc's live coverage of the shooting in newtown, connecticut. the first call for help came just after 9:30. >> the school shooting at an elementary school in fairfield county, connecticut. >> reporter: it is a small town, holiday lights are up everywhere. >> a young man wearing black. >> he entered the school, he was wearing all black. >> armed with at least two weapons, carrying two handguns and hundreds of rounds of amm
